Training for Working with Biological Materials

In addition to the basic laboratory training courses (Lab Safety Fundamentals, PPE Safety, Hazardous Waste Management, and Fire Safety Training) personnel working with biological materials might need to take one or more of the following online courses. Training requirements are determined by risk assessment by the biosafety staff.

  • Aerosol Transmissible Disease (ATD) - REQUIRED for all personnel working with ATDs

  • Biosafety - REQUIRED for all "personnel working in a research or teaching biological lab facility or those working with agents associated with human diseases that pose a moderate hazard to personnel and the environment" 

  • Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) - REQUIRED for those working with or handling BBP (human or non-human primate blood, body fluids, tissues, cells or other potentially infectious material (OPIM) which may contain human bloodborne pathogens)

  • Medical Waste ManagementREQUIRED for all working with ANY sharps or handling biohazardous/medical waste

  • IATA Biological Dangerous Good Shipping - REQUIRED for research personnel who plan to ship biological dangerous good/s 

  • Recombinant Nucleic Acids - REQUIRED for those working with or handling recombinant nucleic acids
